Saturday, May 15th Fieldale Heritage Festival

2010 Fieldale Heritage Festival Features:

Coninentals The 2010 event is on tap for Saturday, May 15th. But the action really begins on Friday evening as the 2nd North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Line makes camp in the lower ballfield near the Iron Bridge Memorial. This group is made up of members from 8 different states and are well known for their Revolutionary War reincampments. Following this event they will participate in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse memorial event. The Continental Line, Inc. was incorporated in 1995 as a not-for-profit organization in the state of Pennsylvania and is a educational organization of recreated units representing the Continental Army, the Continental Artillery, the Continental Marines, the State Navies, the various colonial militias, and units in the service of the French King during the American Revolution.

Music is an all day theme of this years festival. Frank Gribble will perform from 1 until 2 PM. More info to follow.

Montana YoungDean Smith and Montana Young will be featured from 10 AM until 2 PM. Montana Young, who lives east of the Crooked Road in southwest Virginia, is one of the new faces in Bluegrass. She's only 12 years or so old and has already apprenticed with Buddy Pendleton, who played with Bill Monroe and Joan Baez. She's also performed with Wayne Henderson and Aubrey Haney. Pictured here is her recently released CD, "Fiddlin' Up a Storm,". More info here.

Dean SmithDean Smith launched the Southwestern Virginia Chapter of the Acoustic Roadshow, a sister affiliate to the mainframe Acoustic Roadshow, with the added intent of bringing musicians from other localities together to learn and grow. January 2006 brought a new window of opportunity to Dean as he picked up bag and baggage (as well as a few guitar cases) and moved to Ferrum Virginia. Though he still returns to his native Pennsylvania for performances and other creative projects, he is active in solo, duo and group performances throughout SW Virginia. Dean offers group as well as individual instruction in guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo and violin at Woodall's Music in Martinsville, Downtown Music and the YMCA in Rocky Mount VA. More info here.

Mike MitchellMike Mitchell, who started the School of Music in Floyd, VA, will be on hand from 4 until 5 PM. Mike Mitchell began playing the violin at the age of five and received his education at the Western Conservatory of Music in Ontario, Canada, . His passion for music led him to a string performance major at Youngstown State University. He followed this training with 10 years of national touring with rock and acoustic ensembles. Mike now performs with the acclaimed mountain music group, Blue Moonshine, and Floyd Time. He lives in Floyd, VA with his wife and two children. More info here.

As always historic displays play a big part in the Fieldale Heritage Festival. This year there will be 35-40 tables of material on display. Also the perennially popular antique cars will be featured as well as petting animals for the kids. Lots of food and drink will be available and restroom facilities will be nearby.
